freedom

they were young and their love was fierce
fierce as their tongues
fierce as their expectations

his love for her was mad
though she fell hard in madness
while he worked to serve her
she grew bitter in his absence

she pushed and kicked and struggled to escape him
but he would not let her go

he endured her silence, her cruelties and her blame
but she would not let it go

suffocated, he lost to her
eyes closed, crossed by the frost in her
and she blind to the fury and the cost of her
all she knows is he is gone now

but maybe if he’d walked away
maybe he’ld be here today.
